A woman who had been charged with the murder of her husband in the year 2009 was yesterday sentenced to serve 25 years in prison after a court in Kitale found her guilty of the offence.
Rahab Njoki pled with the court for a lesser sentence through her lawyer. She expressed remorse declaring that she had no intentions to kill her husband but was rather overcome with anger.
Appearing before Kitale High Court Judge Justice Joseph Karanja, Njoki narrated the incident that led to the murder. In her statement, she told the court that on the fateful day the childless couple had invited a close friend for dinner and in the chatty mood John Kimotho (deceased) made a telephone call and at the end of the conversation he said ‘I love you’.
The words made Njoki angry prompting her to pick a kitchen knife with which she stabbed him in front of Paul Obindi before running away.
Njoki hid in Eldoret town for a while and was arrested by a matatu driver who told her that police were searching for her. The driver took her to Moi’s bridge police station before she was transferred to Eldoret police station.
Kamotho’s father was called in the witness box and testified that the two had been having a troubled relationship since they married. In one incident that led to their temporary separation, Njoki had threatened Kamotho of stabbing him.
Justice Karanja dismissed Njoki’s pleas for a lesser sentence and sentenced her to 25 years due to her record of attempting to stab him in the past. She was given 14 days to appeal.
